Many Options of Private Registration Plates for Your Vehicle
There are five types of private registration plates available to buy, some with formats dating back to the early 1900’s! Read on to find out more.
Cherished (dateless) Private Plates

Dateless registrations were first issued in 1903 and were granted to new cars until 1963. These registrations often began with one, two, or three characters that served as regional identifiers, followed by one, two, three, or four numerals. This layout was flipped in order to extend the dateless format’s longevity.

Irish
Introduced in 1903, Northern Irish registrations typically contain the letters “Z” or “I” (or both). A key advantage of these car registration plates is that they are dateless, meaning they can be assigned to vehicles of any age. This makes them particularly desirable for those looking for a perfect plate that doesn’t reveal when the car was first registered. Many collectors and enthusiasts seek out Irish number plates from Northern Ireland for their timeless appeal.
Suffix
Registrations with suffixes first emerged in 1963 after the dateless format was abandoned. Suffix type registration plates have three characters, a space, one, two, or three digits, and one or more characters at the end. As an illustration, the suffix registration XYZ 321A has the age identifier as the final character. The first plate with the letter “A” as the last letter debuted in 1963, while the last plate with the letter “Y” debuted in 1982.
Prefix
registrations were established in 1983 and continued until 2001. The age identifying letter appeared first on prefix registration plates, followed by three numerals, a space, and three letters. A123 XYZ, for example, would be a prefix type registration that might have first emerged in 1983. The letter Y, like suffix plates, was the final one used in this style of registration in 2001
Current
The current UK number plate system replaced the prefix style in 2001. It consists of two regional letters, two digits indicating the registration year, and three random letters. For example, a plate like YD53 KMX was registered between September 2003 and February 2004. New age identifiers are released twice a year, with 21 and 71 plates introduced in 2021.

Personalised Number Plates FAQ's From Customers

Are private number plates a good investment?

Yes, private number plates can be a great investment, especially if they are rare or highly desirable. Over time, the value of unique plates often increases, making them a profitable asset. Many people have made significant returns by buying and selling private registrations.

Private number plates add a personal touch to your vehicle, making it stand out while also allowing you to express individuality. They can also help disguise the age of your vehicle and, in some cases, increase the resale value.
Yes! A private number plate makes a unique and thoughtful gift. When purchasing, you will be listed as the grantee (buyer), while the recipient will be the nominee (the person who will assign the plate to their vehicle). If their details aren’t added at purchase, the nominee can still be added later when the V778 retention document is issued.

To assign a private number plate to a vehicle, you need:

  • V750 certificate of entitlement (if purchasing a new plate).
  • V778 retention document (if transferring a plate from another vehicle).
  • V5C logbook for the vehicle receiving the new plate.

Once you have these, you can apply online or via post to assign the plate.

Legal & Regulations

What are the legal rules for private number plates?

Private number plates must comply with DVLA regulations, which include:

  • Correct font, size, spacing, and colour
  • Approved letter and number sequences
  • Not making a vehicle appear newer than it is

Additionally, the vehicle must be taxed and roadworthy, and incorrect display of plates can result in a fine of up to £1,000.

Not all private plates can be assigned to all vehicles. You cannot use a plate that makes a car appear newer than it actually is. However, older or dateless plates can be applied to any vehicle. If unsure, check with a reputable number plate dealer before purchasing.

When you apply for a private plate, you have two options:

  1. Retain the original plate – Pay an £80 retention fee to keep it for future use.
  2. Let it go – If not retained, the original number is lost once the new registration is assigned.

Once the transfer is complete, you must remove the old plates and fit your new ones.

No. If your V5C logbook states that the registration is non-transferable, you cannot sell or retain the number plate. It must stay with the vehicle for its lifetime.
If you want to keep your private plate when selling your car, you must put it on retention before selling. This involves applying for a V750/retention certificate, which allows you to assign the plate to another vehicle later. If you sell the car without retaining the plate, the new owner inherits it.

Costs & Fees

How much does it cost to assign a private plate to my car?
The DVLA charges an £80 assignment fee to transfer a private plate onto or off a vehicle. This fee is paid when purchasing a private plate or when transferring it between vehicles.
Besides the £80 DVLA assignment fee, you may need to purchase new physical plates to display on your vehicle. Some dealers also offer optional services such as custom plate styles (3D Gel, 4D, etc.) at an additional cost.

Buying & Selling

What documents do I need to buy a private registration?

If you want the plate transferred onto your vehicle immediately, you need:

  • Your vehicle’s V5C logbook (in your or the nominee’s name)
  • Current MOT certificate (if applicable)
  • Current road tax details

If you want to buy a plate but use it later, no documents are needed initially. You’ll need them when assigning the plate to a vehicle.

No, you can keep the plate on retention using a V750 certificate until you’re ready to assign it.

You can transfer a plate online or by post through the DVLA. Ensure you have:

  • The V750 (Certificate of Entitlement) or V778 (Retention Document)
  • The V5C logbook for the vehicle receiving the plate

Once approved, fit your new plates and update your insurance provider.
