What Are the Benefits of 3D Gel Number Plates

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Read this to find out how to enhance your car’s look with custom 4D plates, and make your vehicle stand out on the road or the car park.

Want to enhance your car’s look with custom 4D plates? We’re going to cover everything you need to know in this article, from what 4D plates are, the different types, and why you should make the change.

4D Plates – What You Should Know

4D Plates – What You Should Know

4D plates have characters that stand directly out of the background instead of being flat. This means that if you were to shine a light on the plate, the characters would cast a shadow. There are different types of 4D plates, which we will explore later, but all are popular options if you want to enhance your car’s look.

These plates are laser cut with acrylic and are three-dimensional, adding some added class to your vehicle’s overall look. At first glance, it might be difficult to tell the difference between a 3D and 4D plate, but once you learn how to differentiate them, you will forever be on the lookout.

Unsurprisingly, 4D plates are perfectly visible to cameras, ANPR, and ULEZ, and they are made using fully DVLA-compliant and legal materials – provided you get them from a registered seller like us. However, as getting these plates is considered a modification to your vehicle, you should declare them when doing your vehicle insurance. Any plate other than the standard printed plate should count as a modification, so always keep this in mind when looking at dimensional plates.

They Are Legal in the UK

In late 2021 4D number plates became legal under new number plate regulations in the UK. However, this is only the case when the number plate follows the rules set out by the government. If these rules are not followed, then the number plate – whether they are 4D or not – is an illegal plate.

Currently, there is nothing to suggest that 4D plates are going to become illegal in the UK. As such, you should not get fined for having these plates, but accidental and illegal fines can still happen. If this does happen, make sure to dispute it and get the situation resolved – you should not be paying a fine.

For anyone wondering, these are some of the number plate regulations that you need to follow, as set out by the UK government:

  • Not have reflective characters (letters, numbers)
  • Not have removable characters (letters, numbers)
  • Be made with a background of reflective material
  • Have a plain background, with no pattern or distracting characteristics
  • Front plates must have black characters on a white background
  • Back/rear plates must have black characters on a yellow background
  • Show who supplied the number plate (mark of provider is required)
  • Have a British Standard number for any plates fitted after the first of September 2021
  • Have lettering in the Charles Wright 2001 font
  • Can have certain identifiers, flags, or symbols

Please remember that carbon gel plates are illegal for road use, but you can get hex plates, provided you do not cut them down.

Types of 4D Plates

Types of 4D Plates

There are four different types of 4D plates that you should know about if you want to enhance your car’s look– 4D (3mm and 5mm) and 4D (3mm and 5mm) gel plates, and we will look through these options below.

4D Plates

The regular 4D plates are laser cut with angular or more sharp edges (but not sharp enough to hurt you, don’t worry). These are blocky and stand out compared to other plates, offering an eye-catching and three-dimensional plate that you can pick out of a crowd.

Despite the name, 4D plates are three-dimensional rather than four-dimensional, so don’t let that confuse you.

  • 3mm – 3mm 4D plates have characters that are raised 3mm from the plate, offering something different without being too obvious
  • 5mm – 5mm 4D plates have characters that are raised 5mm from the plate, offering a more dramatic look from the side or other angles

4D Gel Plates

Similar to the regular 4D plates, the 4D gel plate is a combination between the laser cut characters that the 4D plate uses and the gel effect that 3D gel plates use. These plates also come in 4 and 5mm depth options, but with the added gel style to make the characters glossy and stand out that much more.

  • 3mm – 3mm gel plates have characters that are raised 3mm from the plate with a beautiful gel dome to add some shine and a glossy effect, while not being too in-your-face
  • 5mm – 5mm gel plates have characters that are raised 5mm from the back of the plate with the classic domed, glossy finish, making your excellent style choice obvious to everyone

Custom Plates Explained

Custom Plates Explained

There are different routes to explore when you want custom plates – you can look at the plate style (3D, 4D etc), or the characters used on the plate. Many people who choose to get custom plates like to spell out words or names to really set their plate apart, and you can get the best of both worlds by combining the two options.

With that being said, there are new private plate laws in 2024 that you should be aware of before ordering your own custom plates. You should also understand rules like why there is no Z in number plates before you order.

As long as you register your plate and make sure everything is perfectly legal, you can have some fun with your plates. Just don’t expect to get one of the character combinations that have been banned for reasons that will be obvious when you see it (banned plates include HA24 SSS, AA24 OL2, and SKA4 NKY).
