[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Can ULEZ cameras read 4D number plates? Can you try and avoid these cameras, and should you? Find out what you need to know here.
With the expansion of the ULEZ in London, you might be wondering – can ULEZ cameras read 4D number plates? Is there a way for you to avoid the cameras they use if your vehicle has 4D plates on it?
At Number Plate Clinic, we want to keep you in the know with everything vehicle and number plate-related in the UK. From finding the perfect number plate, fitting it, and even explaining how they are made. Today, we want to walk you through ULEZ cameras and 4D plates, and tell you everything you need to know.
What Are ULEZ Cameras?
ULEZ cameras use Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) to identify vehicles by looking at their number plates. However, the ANPR that the Transport for London (TfL) uses doesn’t monitor a vehicle’s insurance or MOT status.
These cameras are there to monitor the ULEZ area and look for vehicles that do not adhere to the standards for the area. However, they are not without their faults, as we will explain later in this article.
What do Police See When They Run Your Plates UK
Wondering what police systems will see if they scan your vehicle’s number plate? ANPR will be used in ULEZ zones as well as on your regular roads and areas to track all vehicles that pass the area.
With ANPR, police can see:
- Unregistered vehicles
- Stolen vehicles
- Uninsured vehicles
- Vehicles linked with crimes or cases
- Who the owner of the vehicle is
- MOT status
These cameras are all over the country, so you should always make sure that your vehicle is operating within the law. Get your MOT, use the right plates, and make sure your car adheres to all the rules of the road, unless you want to find yourself with a hefty fine or worse.
What Cars Don’t Meet ULEZ Standards?
Any vehicles that don’t meet the Euro 4 or Euro 6 standards will be charged £12.650 daily while driven in the ULEZ zone. Anyone who doesn’t pay this will get penalty charges, which can go up to £180 per day – so it’s crucial to pay these fees on time if you must. Charges are enforced 24/7 every day of the year except for Christmas Day.
Vehicles that are exempt from ULEZ payments and fines include:
- Classic cars manufactured before January 1st 1973
- Vehicles registered as a ‘historic vehicle’
- Blue Badge holders in the disabled benefits, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle, or ‘Disabled’ and ‘Disabled Passenger Vehicle’ categories
- Electric vehicles
- Hybrid vehicles that meet either the Euro 6 or Euro 4 standards
- Diesel vehicles that meet the Euro 6 standards
- Petrol vehicles that meet the Euro 4 standards
- Vehicles licensed as London taxis
So, if you can, work towards getting your car to meet the ULEZ standards if you frequent London or the ULEZ zone.
Why You Shouldn’t Try and Trick ULEZ Cameras
It might be tempting to try and trick ULEZ cameras with different tricks, but we do not recommend or endorse this. Not only is tricking the cameras by way of using false plates or obscuring plates illegal, but it can get you and others in trouble.
You can be hit with fines, or your actions could result in other people being accidentally fined in your place. If you can, get your vehicle to meet the ULEZ standards so that you can freely travel in the area. Unfortunately, this can be a costly endeavour, but it can save you a lot of money in the long-term.
ULEZ Cameras Are Full of Faults
It’s worth mentioning that there have been a lot of issues with ULEZ cameras for many years, and even more so since the ULEZ zone was expanded. These cameras are frequently mistakenly identifying vehicles and number plates, leading to unjust fines for people who shade some of the same number plate characters and live in other parts of the country.
Some ULEZ cameras have also been installed incorrectly to point in the wrong direction, which has also led to more unjust fines for people avoiding the zone. There have been many cases of motorists being handed fines due to faulty ULEZ cameras, with just a few examples shown in the Daily Mail.
Can ULEZ Cameras Read 4D Number Plates?
Can ULEZ cameras read 4D number plates? In short – yes. ULEZ cameras can absolutely read 4D plates just like all other legal number plates. 4D plates would not be legal if these cameras couldn’t see them. These plates are potentially more visible to cameras and are less likely to get obscured thanks to their design.
When you get your number plates from a certified seller like us, you can rest easy knowing that your plates are completely legal for road use. It’s worth mentioning here that while 4D plates are legal, you should declare them when doing insurance as they are classed as a vehicle modification – this applies to all dimensional number plates.
Number Plate Rules and Regulations UK
We’ll provide a quick breakdown of the rules and regulations for number plates in the UK below. For a full list, including the required spacing for plates, you can find out more through the gov website and leaflets.
The number plates used on your vehicle, no matter the type, needs to:
- Not have reflective characters (letters, numbers)
- Not have removable characters (letters, numbers)
- Be made with a background of reflective material
- Have a plain background, with no pattern or distracting characteristics
- Front plates must have black characters on a white background
- Back/rear plates must have black characters on a yellow background
- Show who supplied the number plate (mark of provider is required)
- Have a British Standard number for any plates fitted after the first of September 2021
Number plates are allowed to have raised characters (3D and 4D), and may have certain identifiers, flags, or symbols. They cannot be tampered with in any way, including using other fonts, cutting it down, changing the characters, colours, or adding any non-standard symbols or designs to the plate. Electric vehicles are allowed to have a green plate to signify this and set them apart from other cars.
The rear plate needs to be yellow, while the front is white, and there can be no background patterns. All plates must be made from a reflective material and display black characters in the Charles Wright 2001 font. Plates fitted after September 2001 must be marked with a British Standard Number, and must show the plate supplier.

So, can ULEZ cameras read 4D number plates? Yes, these cameras are ANPR cameras, and 4D number plates are perfectly visible to them. However, you need to remember that the ULEZ cameras are full of faults, so if you get fined for not having a car that meets the standards, double-check to make sure it was actually your vehicle.
