What Actually Makes a Number Plate “4D”

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]A 4D number plate can be easy to identify for some people, but for those new and interested to this custom plate, what features make it stand out from a standard, or 3D plate?

In today’s blog, we will answer the question ‘What actually makes a number plate “4D”?’.

The Number Plate Clinic is an established provider of number plates of many varieties. Whether it’s Gel plates, Bike plates, EV plates, Import plates and much more. As a provider of these plates, we feel like it is best to provide you the information you need when it comes to the services and items we offer.

Are all 4D plates legal?

Are all 4D plates legal?

4D plates are legal, as long as they are in line with DVLA regulations. This can be achieved by using the services of a verified platemaker. This means that the plate must:

  • Be made of reflective material.
  • Show solid black characters on a white (front) or yellow (rear) background.
  • Use the standard “Charles Wright” font with correct dimensions and spacing.
  • Have no background patterns.
  • Include the supplier’s name and postcode, plus the British Standard number (like BS AU 145e for newer plates).

You can view the full regulations for custom plates here.

What do the police look for on an illegal plate?

If an officer spots a vehicle that appears to have a non-compliant plate, they can pull the driver over for a closer inspection. They’ll look for:

  • Font and character dimensions: Are they the correct height, width, and stroke thickness?
  • Spacing: Is the spacing between characters and groups correct? Are there any screws or fixings deliberately placed to alter the appearance of a letter or number?
  • Colour and reflectivity: Is the front plate white and the rear yellow? Are the characters solid black and non-reflective? Is the background reflective?
  • Condition: Is the plate clean, undamaged, and clearly legible?
  • Mandatory markings: Are the British Standard number and supplier details present and correctly sized/positioned?
  • Illegal modifications: Any stickers, overlays, or patterns on the plate that are not permitted.
  • Authenticity: Does it look like a genuine, legally manufactured plate? Unauthorised suppliers often produce plates that don’t meet all standards.

Can an illegal plate be reported?

Yes, outside the police making their own observations, illegal plates can be reported via:

  • Public reporting: Members of the public can report vehicles with suspected illegal plates to the police or directly to the DVLA. Photos can often be used as evidence.
  • MOT Tests: Vehicles with illegal plates will fail their annual MOT test, meaning they cannot legally be driven until compliant plates are fitted. MOT testers are trained to identify non-compliant plates.
  • Traffic Wardens/Council Enforcement: While primarily focused on parking, these individuals may report severely non-compliant or obstructed plates to the police.

A plate is illegal if it is being used on a vehicle being driven on a public road. If the plate is on a vehicle on a private property, not being driven, there will likely be no consequence. At the very least, authorities may visit the owner and remind them to remove the plate and use the original if the vehicle is going to be driven.

Consequences of illegal plates

If a number plate is found to be illegal, the consequences can include:

  • An on-the-spot fine of up to £1000.
  • The vehicle failing its MOT test.
  • The withdrawal of the vehicle’s registration number by the DVLA in severe or repeated cases.
  • In some extreme cases, the vehicle could be seized.

What are the features that make a plate 4D?

4D number plates are characterised by having characters that are laser-cut, from acrylic, and are elevated on the plate, rather than being flat. This gives them a 3D appearance. (The term ‘4D’ is more about marketing, and a way to differentiate them from 3D number plates).

In addition, the characters are attached individually to the plate, creating a more dynamic and prominent 3D look, rather than plates that have printed characters.

Here are the key details:

  • As mentioned previously, the acrylic characters are laser-cut, resulting in characters that are between 3-5mm thick.
  • The laser cutting creates characters that have very crisp, clean edges.
  • Due to the materials and adhesive used to secure the characters, 4D plates are relatively durable, allowing them to handle weather conditions, UV exposure, and even pressure washing.
  • Due to the parts and labour, 4D plates carry a premium over 3D plates. They’re a great way to add a unique touch and make your car stand out from the crowd.

How are they different from 3D plates?

While both 3D and 4D number plates aim to give your vehicle a more premium, raised look compared to standard flat plates, they achieve this effect in fundamentally different ways, leading to distinct aesthetics:

  • 3D plates typically use a polyurethane gel resin. The characters are formed by applying this gel to the surface of the plate. The gel then cures, creating a raised, domed, and often glossy finish. It’s more of a “bubble” or “gel” effect.
  • The gel resin gives the characters a soft, rounded, and often slightly squishy feel.
  • They tend to have a high-gloss, wet-look finish due to the gel.
  • The raised effect is generally less pronounced than 4D plates, offering a more understated enhancement. The raised height is typically less, often around 1.7mm – 2mm, and can vary slightly across the curved surface of the character.
