Thanks to recent changes in legislation, 4D plates are perfectly legal in the UK. This means that, as long as you follow all the number plate rules, you should be able to drive around without having to worry about fines.
With that being said, the world isn’t perfect. There can be complications that can make having 4D plates an unpleasant experience when dealing with the law, but it isn’t your fault.
It’s worth noting that, because these plates are legal, you should have no problem passing an MOT with them! If an MOT fails, it will be because of another reason, not your 4D plates, so you don’t need to stress about that.
Because 4D plates are legal in the UK, you should not have been fined because the plates are 4D. Rather, there will be another issue that is making your plates illegal. This could be anything from your plates being obscured by mud or dust to the plates being stolen, tampered with, or manufactured illegally.
With that being said, people do still occasionally get fined just for having 4D plates when they deal with officers who are not aware of the updates in legislation. We’ll tell you what to do if you have been fined for having 4D plates when they are legal in the section below.
If you have been fined for having 4D plates when they are legal and follow all the rules and regulations set out by the DVLA (which we will go through later in the article), then you should follow up the fine with all the facts and outline that your plates are legal.
Unfortunately, many officers still think that 4D plates are illegal, and are all too happy to hand out fines when they aren’t aware of the recent changes in law surrounding these plates.
So, if you get fined for having fully legal 4D plates, be persistent in challenging it. As officers are better educated on the legislation surrounding 3D and 4D plates, we can only hope that there are fewer fines that need to be challenged – because no one wants to have trouble with the law.
You can be fined up to £1,000 if you are incorrectly displaying your number plates, or if they are illegal. Your vehicle will also fail its MOT test, which will cost you extra money.
Many people receive on the spot fines of £100 for having illegal (or presumably illegal) number plates. On top of that, you can get three penalty points added to your licence. So, do everything you can to ensure that your plates are legal, and only buy from a trusted plate provider – like us.
The UK has strict number plate requirements to follow if you want to ensure that your plates are legal. From the dimensions, spacing requirements to the colours, materials, and display, you need to make sure that you get your plates from a registered supplier, or else you are at risk of having illegal plates.
Number plates need to be made from a material that is reflective and display black lettering or characters in the Charles Wright 2001 font. The rear plate must be yellow, while the front is white, and there can be no background patterns. All plates fitted after September 2001 must be marked with a British Standard Number, and must show the plate supplier.
All plates must be registered with the DVLA and bought from a registered supplier. You are not permitted to reuse plates or reuse character combinations from other plates, and everything on the plate must be properly spaced, or else it will be deemed illegal.
Your number plate needs to be visible both off the road and on the road, too. This means that you need to clean the plate when necessary so that characters are not obscured. You are not allowed to tamper with plates in any way, including cutting it down, changing the colours, fonts, characters, or adding non-standard designs or symbols to the plate.
Correctly spaced out number plates will follow the below guidelines:
Incorrectly spaced number plates can lead to the numbers and characters being misrepresented. If this happens, your plates will not easily be picked up by ANPR, and they will be deemed illegal.
Any kind of number plate that does not follow the guidelines outlined in the above sections are illegal. So, any plates that are incorrectly spaced, use the wrong font, not registered with the DVLA, and so on – are illegal.
It is worth noting that 3D and 4D (also called 5D) plates are fully legal in the UK – provided you follow the rules. These plates are easily seen by cameras, and we encourage you to declare them to insurance companies since they are seen as modifications to your vehicle.
Every year, the DVLA will ban a list of number plates that are deemed “too rude” to be seen on the streets. This year, 74 combinations have been ruled out, and 73 were banned in 2023. Have a look at the combinations below, and you can probably understand why they won’t be popping up on our roads.
