Number plates play a key role in today’s society, and 3D gel plates have grown popular over the years. However, you might be wondering, are 3D gel number plates legal in the UK? What makes a number plate legal or illegal?
There are lots of reasons for you to consider getting 3D plates, but if they’re illegal, what’s the point? Well, the good news is, these plates can be perfectly legal, but you need to follow strict rules. If you want to find out all the details, then you’d better keep reading.
What Are 3D Gel Plates?
3D gel number plates are also called 3D gel resin or 3D domed gel plates. These plates are made with the usual sheet base and covering the plate characters with a polyurethane gel resin. This is what gives the characters that attractive raised profile that we see on these plates (and also why they are called 3D gel resin plates as well).
These 3D gel plates are different from the traditional printed plates, as the characters have domed resin over them to give them a different effect. They stand out more, and are sure to set you apart from the crowd if you got these plates.
3D vs 4D Number Plates
As you know, 3D gel plates are characterised by their attractive domed resin that covers the characters. 3D plates, however, usually have laser-cut characters that are made from solid acrylic. This gives the 4D plates a much bolder and eye-catching look, while 3D plates are glossy and rounded.
Overall, 4D plates have a more ‘obvious’ appearance, and you can immediately tell that the characters are raised from the plate. 3D gel plates are a little bit more low-key. They are just as attractive, but offer a completely different look to enjoy.
With that being said, there are also 4D gel places, which offer the same boldness of the regular 4D plates as well as the attractive and glossy resin dome of the 3D gel plate. All of these options are fantastic if you are looking for an affordable way to make your vehicle stand out and be even more recognisable.
Are 3D Gel Number Plates Legal in the UK
Yes! 3D gel number plates are 100% legal in the UK, as long as you follow the rules and regulations that have been set out by the government.
With that being said, 3D plates are seen as a modification. Although they add no extra risk to your vehicle, it’s worth declaring that you have 3D plates when you are doing your insurance. Depending on your insurer, some will want to know this information, while others will not care about it much. So, to be safe, you should always declare them so that it doesn’t cause any issues down the line.
UK Government Licence Plate Rules and Regulations
There are only a handful of illegal number plates in the UK, with carbon gel plates being one of them. However, you can still purchase these plates for indoor use, such as for decoration. Other plates that are illegal are plates that don’t follow the rules and regulations set out by the UK government. This can include printed plates, 3D plates, and 4D plates.
In order for a number plate to be legal in the UK, it needs to follow these rules:
- Not have reflective characters (letters, numbers)
- Not have removable characters (letters, numbers)
- Be made with a background of reflective material
- Have a plain background, with no pattern or distracting characteristics
- Front plates must have black characters on a white background
- Back/rear plates must have black characters on a yellow background
- Show who supplied the number plate (mark of provider is required)
- Have a British Standard number for any plates fitted after the first of September 2021
- Must have characters written in the Charles Wright 2001 font
- Can have raised characters (3D & 4D)
- Can display certain identifiers such as flags or symbols
On top of the above rules, number plates need to follow these spacing guidelines in order to be legal:
- 50mm character width
- 79mm character height
- 14mm character thickness (stroke)
- 11mm space between characters
- 11mm side margins
- 11mm top and bottom margins
- 33mm between random numbers and age identifier
- 19mm of vertical space between random numbers and age identifier
What Happens if You Have Illegal Plates?
While it may vary from a case by case basis, you can expect to get an immediate fine and points on your licence if you have illegal number plates on your vehicle. This can be from you attaching show plates to your vehicle, incorrectly spaced characters on your plate, wrong materials used, or a forged, cut, or altered plate, among other reasons.
This is one of the big reasons why it’s crucial for you to get your plates from a trusted supplier. If you want to get new number plates, make sure that the shop you purchase them from is DVLA-compliant and follows all regulations – like us.
Will Your MOT Fail if You Have 3D Gel Plates?
An MOT test is an annual test to make sure that your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. Here, your vehicle will be checked to see how environmentally-friendly and safe it is, and whether it should or should not be driven.
Dozens of tests will be carried out on your vehicle once it is three years old (or four years old in Northern Ireland). Some of these include:
- Seatbelt tests
- Mirror tests
- Fuel system tests
- Brakes tests
- Lights tests
- Exhaust system tests
- Windscreen wipers tests
To get an MOT test done, you will need to go to an approved MOT test centre. These centres will have blue signage with three white triangles
So, will your vehicle fail if you have 3D gel plates? No, your MOT will not fail if you have these plates. This is because these plates are perfectly legal (again, only if they follow the strict rules we went through at the beginning of the article), so there is no reason for them to affect your MOT. They do not make your vehicle any more or less dangerous, and should have no real impact on your MOT.
Can Cameras See 3D Gel Plates?
Cameras, ULEZ, and ANPR can all see 3D gel number plates very well – if they couldn’t, these plates would not be legal in the first place. If you were hoping to avoid all the cameras we have on our UK roads, then these plates are not going to do it, and we do not advise trying to find workarounds.
