[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Can you bend 4D plates? How careful do you need to be when installing them? We will go through everything you need to know in this article.
If you are wondering how fragile or durable different kinds of number plates are, you might have an important question in mind – can you bend 4D plates? Not only that, but is it possible to install these number plates using screws, or is there a safer alternative for you to use?
At Number Plate Clinic, we look at why 4D plates are the best alternative to standard plates, 4D plate trends and predictions, explore all the top reasons to upgrade your vehicle to 4D plates, and much more. As the best alternative to Halfords for all your plate needs, we would love to supply you with your new favourite modification, including 4D hex plates.
What Are 4D Number Plates?
4D number plates are perfect for enhancing your car’s look, especially high-end vehicles, and are readily available to be ordered from many different trusted online stores – for example, ours. No matter where you are, we can get your road-legal plates to you quickly and easily, so you never have to miss out. At Number Plate Clinic, we aim for next day delivery on all plates ordered before 2pm, so there’s no missing out.
4D plates are usually laser cut with acrylic and three-dimensional. This means that the characters stand out from the background rather than being flat like standard printed plates, so they will cast a shadow if light is directed at them.
There are two standard character thicknesses to choose from when it comes to 4D plates, and there are also 4D gel options for those who like the gel look:
- 3mm – 3mm 4D plates have characters that are raised 3mm from the plate, offering something different without being too obvious
- 5mm – 5mm 4D plates have characters that are raised 5mm from the plate, offering a more dramatic look from the side or other angles
Are 4D Plates Legal in the UK?
Although 4D plates are legal and there are no plans for them to become illegal, there have been cases where drivers have been wrongfully fined for having them. If you are fined for having 4D plates, we encourage you to dispute it and get the issue resolved if you are not in the wrong.
These plates are visible to cameras, ANPR, and ULEZ, and they are made using fully DVLA-compliant and legal materials if you get them from a registered seller like us. You will not fail your MOT if you have 4D plates, unless you cut your plate down, don’t follow the 2024 private plate laws, or have carbon gel plates.
However, as getting these plates is considered a modification to your vehicle, you should declare them when doing your vehicle insurance.
Can You Bend 4D Plates?
No, you cannot bend 4D plates, as they can easily break. Unlike 3D plates, there is no flexibility in these plates, and not only will the characters break, but the base can break as well. This is the case with any number plate with an acrylic base, as they are not flexible.
If you want to be able to bend a number plate, opt for a standard printed plate on an aluminium base. These will get the best results without the risk of the plate or characters breaking, and you can achieve different looks and angles depending on your needs.
Why Would You Want to Bend a Number Plate?
It’s important to remember that number plates need to be able to maintain their original shape, which is why DVLA-approved materials need to be used to manufacture them. In some cases, you may want to bend your number plate to fit a specific vehicle shape.
Luckily, there are a few ways to do this if you need to, including gently heating the centre of the plate and bending it while warm, to using heavy books to carefully alter the plate’s shape.
It’s worth pointing out here that accidental bends and breaks can happen easily. From minor and major collisions to visiting the automatic car wash where the brushes can bend or break the plate in moments. If you want to avoid these kinds of disasters, we will always recommend getting a number plate holder or frame.
How to Install 4D Number Plates Safely Using Sticky Pads
Since you are most likely to bend number plates accidentally when installing them, we will go through how to install a 4D plate using sticky pads below. We do not recommend using screws when installing these plates (or any plates), as they can easily break the plate, and you will need to fork out more money for replacements.
We sell packs of double-sided sticky pads for number plate installation, which allow for a quick and easy process without needing to drill holes into your plate. The best way to apply these will be to stick them onto the number plate, heat them up slightly and then heat the surface of the vehicle where they will be applied.
When you install this number plate, make sure to firmly hold or press it against the vehicle to allow it to stick properly. Do this for 1– 1 ½ minutes, and you will be good to go.
Tips to Remember When Changing Number Plates
Whether you are working with 4D plates or not, you should be careful when working with number plates, as they can break. When it comes to 4D plates, this is more important than ever, as you should not bend these plates.
Below are some things that you should consider when you are changing plates, or simply working with number plates in general:
- Be gentle as you work
- Don’t do it on a very hot day
- Make sure the adhesive you use is water-resistant
- Never stick a new plate on if it or the vehicle is dirty
- Use the correct materials – double-sided tape or Blue Tack doesn’t cut it!
- Be careful not to scratch or otherwise damage your vehicle in the process
- Use sticky pads rather than screws for installing – these are easier to adjust if you get it wrong, and they don’t damage the plate like drilling through it would.
