How to Keep 4D Plates Looking New

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]4D plates are an investment in personalising your vehicle and bringing a subtle style to your car. Like with any kind of customisation, proper upkeep is key to ensure it lasts long. But do 4D plates need any up keeping? Or do they always look brand-new?

In today’s blog, we will be exploring how to keep 4D plates looking new.

The Number Plate Clinic is an established provider of number plates of many varieties. Whether it’s Gel plates, Bike plates, EV plates, Import plates and much more. As a provider of these plates, we feel like it is best to provide you the information you need when it comes to the services and items we offer.

4D plates, why they need cleaning

4D plates, why they need cleaning 4D plates need a bit more love than your standard flat ones, and here’s why.

Think about it – those cool, raised letters aren’t just sitting on a flat surface. They create all these little nooks and crannies. Those spaces are ideal for dirt, dust, and all sorts of road gunk to get stuck.

A quick wipe-down on a normal plate might do the trick, but with 4D, you’ve got to get into those edges and around the letters to really clean them properly.

Plus, the way they’re made is a bit different, you’ve usually got these laser-cut acrylic letters stuck onto a baseplate That adhesive and the acrylic itself aren’t as tough as the materials used for regular pressed plates.

If you clean them with harsh chemicals or a rough brush, and you could end up scratching the surface or even making those fancy letters start to peel off.

What happens if I don’t clean my 4D number plate?

Aside from the obvious accumulation of dirt, there are a litany of results that can occur from not cleaning your 4D number plate. Here’s a deeper look into the results that can occur:

  • A buildup of dirt: As mentioned before, the most obvious consequence is the accumulation of dirt, dust, road grime, salt, and other environmental pollutants. This layer will dull the glossy finish of the acrylic and obscure the sharp definition of the raised 4D lettering over time.
  • Harder to read the plate: Over time, the build-up of dirt can make the number plate harder to read, especially in poor lighting conditions or by automated number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras. This could potentially lead to issues with the police and can result in fines depending on the severity.
  • Loss of aesthetics: The distinctive 3D effect and premium look of 4D plates will be diminished or completely lost under a layer of grime. They will simply look like dirty, standard number plates, defeating the purpose of choosing this style.
  • Difficulty in future cleaning: The longer you leave your plates uncleaned, the more stubborn the dirt will become, requiring more effort and potentially harsher cleaning methods (which you should avoid) to restore their appearance.
  • Premature wear and tear: While 4D plates are generally durable, neglecting their cleaning can contribute to premature wear and tear on the surface and the raised elements, shortening their lifespan and causing them to look aged before their time.

Is there a potential for damage?

Yes, neglecting the cleaning of your plate over an extended period of time can lead to damage on your plate. That being said, your environment, driving habits, and driving regularity heavily influence this.

Here are some of the damages that can occur:

  • If dirt and grime are left for extended periods, they can become baked onto the surface, making them much harder to remove without potentially scratching the acrylic during cleaning.
  • Some road salts or other chemicals, if left uncleaned, could potentially react with the acrylic material over time, leading to discoloration or degradation.
  • While less likely with just dirt, a thick layer of accumulated debris around the edges of the raised letters could potentially put extra strain on the adhesive over time, although this is more of a risk with improper cleaning methods.

How can I keep my 4D plate looking brand-new?

How can I keep my 4D plate looking brand-new?

Keeping your 4D plate looking new mainly revolves around gentle cleaning methods, and other steps which we will mention in detail below:

Cleaning a 4D number plate

  • Try to give your plates a gentle wash at least once a week, or even more if they get really mucky.
  • Use lukewarm water (ideally distilled to avoid water spots) and a mild soap made for cars or a very gentle dish soap. Steer clear of harsh chemicals.
  • Always use a soft, clean microfiber cloth to wipe them down. This stops scratches.
  • A super soft detailing brush can help get dirt out from around the raised letters and edges, though this is optional.

The step-by-step of cleaning a 4D plate

  1. Gentle rinse: Wash off any loose dirt with lukewarm water.
  2. Soapy softness: Dip your microfiber cloth in soapy water and gently wipe all over the plates, being extra careful around the raised 4D bits with small, circular movements.
  3. Edge patrol: If needed, use the soft brush to carefully clean around the raised letters and the plate edges where dirt likes to hide.
  4. Soap away: Rinse the plates really well with clean water to get rid of all the soap, which can leave streaks.
  5. Gentle dry: Pat the plates dry with a clean, lint-free microfiber towel. Don’t rub hard! Letting them air dry also works.
  6. (Optional) extra shine: For a super glossy finish, use a special non-scratch polish for acrylic. Put a tiny bit on a microfiber cloth and gently buff. Be careful not to get polish stuck around the 4D letters.

How to reduce damage to a 4D plate

  • Avoid using pressure washers directly on your plates, as the strong force can loosen the 4D letters. If you have to use one, keep it far away from the plates.
  • Be careful with automatic car washes with spinning brushes, as they can scratch the raised parts. Touchless car washes are a better choice.
  • Never use strong cleaners, anything with alcohol, or rough cleaning stuff, as they can damage the plates.
  • When you’re cleaning your car, be gentle around your number plates and don’t bump or scrub them too hard.
  • Clear covers can give your plates extra protection from dirt, bits of road, and light knocks. Just make sure they’re legal and don’t make your plates hard to see.
  • Take a look at your plates now and then for any damage, loose letters, or signs of wear. Fixing things early stops them from getting worse.
  • While 4D plates are usually made to handle sunlight, parking in the shade sometimes can help stop them from fading over a very long time. Some special UV sprays for plastic might add extra protection, but make sure they’re safe for acrylic.
  • Don’t scrape ice off your 4D plates. Use warm water to melt it gently before wiping. Wash off road salt and grime quickly.

Fitting your plate properly

Make sure your plates are fitted properly and tightly, ideally with screws, which are usually more secure for 4D plates than just sticky pads. This stops them from vibrating and getting damaged, which in turn keeps them looking new.
