[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Read this article to learn how to personalise your 3D gel number plates for special occasions and the limiting factors you need to be aware of.

Got a special event coming up, and you want to know how to personalise your 3D gel number plates for special occasions? There are rules you need to remember, so let’s go through what you need to remember when thinking about this.

At Number Plate Clinic, we have a wide range of articles for you to read if you want to find out more about the number plate world. From the most expensive private plate to be sold in the UK and the difference between show and legal plates, to why there’s no Z in plates and why you should consider 3D gels.

We can also help you determine which dimensional plates are best for your car (or as a gift) and explore the cost difference between 3D gel and other custom plates to help you make a smart financial decision.

An Introduction to 3D Gel Number Plates

An Introduction to 3D Gel Number Plates

Made from an acrylic or metal (typically aluminium) base sheet, 3D gel number plates or 3D domed gel/3D gel resin plates are a popular plate choice in recent years. The plate characters get covered with a polyurethane gel resin, which is what gives them that attractive raised profile that we see on these plates.

These 3D gel plates are different from the traditional printed plates, as the characters have domed resin over them to give them a different effect. They stand out more, and are sure to set you apart from the crowd while giving your car an aesthetic boost without being too much.

3D gel plates are a step-up from standard plates and sit comfortably somewhere between the standard and 4D plates in terms of price.

The Legality of 3D Gel Number Plates

3D gel plates are legal in the UK as long as specific rules and regulations are followed. These rules are set out by the government, and allow cameras, ULEZ, and ANPR to scan and read the plates. If these plates couldn’t be read by police systems, they would not be legal, and we wouldn’t sell them!

With that being said, 3D gel plates are seen as a modification. Because of this, you should declare them when doing your insurance. These plates will not have a negative impact on your MOT if they are legal – unlike carbon gel plates, which are illegal in the UK.

Just remember the new 2024 private plate laws if you are planning on getting custom or private plates. Make sure you do your research and work with a trusted plate shop to ensure that the necessary criteria are met. As the best alternative to Halfords, this is something we can do.

Below are the number plate regulations that will determine if a number plate is road legal or not:

  • Not have reflective characters (letters, numbers)
  • Not have removable characters (letters, numbers)
  • Be made with a background of reflective material
  • Have a plain background, with no pattern or distracting characteristics
  • Front plates must have black characters on a white background
  • Back/rear plates must have black characters on a yellow background
  • Show who supplied the number plate (mark of provider is required)
  • Have a British Standard number for any plates fitted after the first of September 2021
  • Must have characters written in the Charles Wright 2001 font
  • Can have raised characters (3D & 4D)
  • Can display certain identifiers such as flags or symbols

How to Personalise Your 3D Gel Number Plates for Special Occasions

How to Personalise Your 3D Gel Number Plates for Special Occasions

Unfortunately, beyond getting a legal private number plate or opting for non-legal plates, there isn’t a lot that you can do to customise a plate for special occasions. There are several options if you are happy to get plates that are not road-legal, such as plates with red backing on the letters or carbon gel plates, but you will not be allowed to drive with these on.

It depends on what you intend to do with the number plate. If you want a plate to use as a decoration, then there’s no need to be limited to the road legality of them. However, if you want these personalised plates to be driven somewhere, you need to do all the paperwork, and follow the struct guidelines the government has set out – there’s no way around that.

If you want to get fully road-legal, DVLA approved, and MOT-compliant 3D gel number plates, you can order some on our site.

What Are the Limiting Factors?

What Are the Limiting Factors?

The obvious limiting factor is the law. As we mentioned above, there are strict rules and regulations that need to be followed when it comes to road-legal number plates. Because of this, you are not allowed to simply do whatever you like.

Options like coloured number plates were legal before September 1st 2021. However, due to changes in the law, they are now not road-legal – but they can still be purchased as show plates or as decorations.

3D gel plates are often chosen over standard plates because they stand out on the road and are durable, but they have their own limitations. These plates on their own look fantastic and can be customised to a degree.

Number plate styles that are not road-legal in the UK include:

  • Any plates with a form of neon lettering
  • Any plates that are carbon style
  • Any plates that have frosted letters
  • Any plates that have glittery letters
  • Any plates that are tinted in any way

Are You Able to Customise Number Plates Yourself?

You are not personally allowed to alter your number plate in the UK. This means adding any kind of stickers, colouring the plate, or altering the lettering or characters. Road-legal plates are carefully manufactured to follow the law, and changing them can result in an immediate fine and points on your licence if you have illegal number plates on your vehicle.

This can be from you attaching show plates to your vehicle, incorrectly spaced characters on your plate, wrong materials used, or a forged, cut, or altered plate, among other reasons. Because of this, we always encourage you to get your plates from a trusted supplier like us, and leave them as-is.

The Number Plate Clinic Cares
