[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The UK has more than 45 million private number plates on the roads, proving that we are a nation of these vehicle modification products. Prices can range from a few hundred pounds to the thousands. This has resulted in the UK personalised number plate marketing being worth an incredible £2 billion.
At Number Plate Clinic, we commonly come across some amazing private number plates in our workshop thanks to our 2D number plate printing services plus other available products.
In this article, we will continue the conversation we started in our recent blog about 2024 private plate laws, so we will share with you some details about the most expensive private plate ever sold in the UK. We will also chat about how the value of number plates is calculated, plus share some other models that didn’t quite make it to the top spot.
How Are The Prices Of Private Number Plates Calculated?
If you have never come across the market for private number plates before, you may need to take a seat when you learn how much some of them can be worth!
Private number plates range in value based on a few factors. The most expensive ones are, understandably, the most unique. In the style of supply and demand, if it’s something that multiple people will want, the cost will naturally be higher. The earlier the issue date the more expensive a plate will be also as these items rise in value over time.
The popularity of plates also dictates their value, and the DVLA chooses to create new designs based on trending themes. Examples of this include common names, animal breeds and business connections. Finally, the lower the amount of characters the higher the price will be. These plates still have rules associated with them and must be officially provided by the DVLA to ensure it’s legally registered. As these plates are extremely unique, they command the highest price tags.
Most Expensive Private Number Plate Sale In The UK
Now for the reason you are here, what is the most expensive number plate that has been sold in the UK?
The registration in question is 25 O, which was sold for a staggering $518,480 at auction in 2014. John Collins, a motoring enthusiast, purchased the sought-after plate due to its connections with the Ferrari 250 GTO. As the chairman of the world’s number one Ferrari dealership, Talacrest, it was no surprise that the aficionado won the plate. As the value has continued to rise since its sale, it’s thought that the plate is worth more than £700,000 in today’s market. However, we don’t think it will be up for sale anytime soon!
Adding to the price tag is the fact that the Ferrari 250 GTO is one of the most expensive cars in the world, hence the higher cost of the associated number plate. The model that John Collins drove at the time of the auction was previously owned by musician Eric Clapton and was thought to be worth more than £2 million back in 2014. These cars have also been highly successful at auction, with a 1968 model selling for £52 million, making it the world’s most expensive car to sell at auction.
What Are The Other Most Expensive Number Plates Sold In The UK?
Only slightly behind the 25 0 number plate are a selection of other plates which remain as some of the UKs highest selling private plates. These are:
- X1 – Sold for £502,500 in 2012 this plate is popular as it represents the lucky roman numbers for the 11.
- G1 – Achieved a sale of £500,000 in 2011 by a reported winner of the Euromillions.
- RR 1 – This plate is the most expensive UK sold one representing Rolls Royce. It was sold for £472,000 in 2018 and was originally issued in 1925.
- F1 – Even if you don’t like cars, you are sure to understand the association this plate has with the world of motor racing. Sold for £440,625 in 2008, this plate has taken pride of place on a Bugatti Veyron in recent years.
- S1 – Issued in 1903, this plate most recently sold for £404,063 in 2008 but has since had a valuation of £1.5 million! This plate, like many of the other most expensive registrations across the UK, is not currently in use.
What Are The Benefits Of Paying For Private Number Plates?
If your budget won’t quite stretch to one of these swanky plates, fear not as there are thousands of other options available which won’t break the bank. There are many advantages of selecting a private number plate which also add to their overall value and appeal.
Investment Pieces
Private number plates are known to be as much as triple in value for some products, proving that even low-cost items are a brilliant investment. Some people are known to collect private plates solely as investment solutions instead of using them on their vehicles. They are also protected as even if the plate itself was stolen from a vehicle, the value is in the registration holder’s document.
Marketing Solutions
Private plates have also been a popular PR and Marketing solution for many years now. This is because they can represent different brand names or products and offer a brilliant opportunity for exposure.
From being included on celebrities’ vehicles to featuring in multi-million pound campaigns, private plates can make their owners a great ROI if used cleverly. They can also be used to create unique bespoke designs. You can learn more about this by checking out our blog about the differences between legal and show plates. However, as 3D and 4D plates are legal, owners can still create eye-catching statements and travel around the UK’s roads.
Sleek Appearance
For the same reasons why we think anyone should consider 3D plates, private plates also offer a sleek and memorable look. They are perfect for upgrading the value of even an older vehicle plus show that the owner is serious when it comes to their motoring passion.
Thoughtful Gift
Private plates also make brilliant gifts even for those who are not mad about motoring. With a wide range of character mixes available on the market, it’s often easy to make a plate which represents someone in a personal way. Whether it’s their name, hobby, business or a personal story, having a plate which represents something important is a lovely statement to make.
