How Do You Make 3D Number Plates?

How is a 3D Number Plate Made?

Manufactured from acrylic with polyurethane resin, 3D number plates undergo many processes to get their distinctive appeal. The characters are laser cut out of a sheet and the template is covered with resin. Once the resin hardens through a chemical reaction, we bake them in a low-grade oven.

This process is known as doming because the characters are raised from the surface of the plate. Once the characters are cool we use a high-strength adhesive to fix them onto the acrylic plate.

Additionally, we’d suggest using adhesive pads to fit the plate to your vehicle rather than drilling through the plate to avoid damage.

Is it Legal to Drive with 3D Number Plates?

As long as these rulings are followed, 3D number plates are road-legal:

• DVLA ruling on sizing of the plate and characters and character placement must be followed
• The faces of the characters should be black. The front number plate background should be white, with a yellow background on the rear plate.
