This user-friendly process has fulfilled over 40 million transactions since its launch in 2015, making the service a resounding success.

Immediate Update and Confirmation

The DVLA online service is extremely efficient; its database is immediately updated and users receive instant email confirmation without the need to wait for documents by post.

Automatic Tax Refund

The system also automatically processes refunds for any remaining full months of vehicle tax and is conveniently sent to the address on the V5C vehicle registration certificate.

Direct Debit Cancellation

For those of you that have set up a Direct Debit for your vehicle tax, this is automatically canceled once you report a change, ensuring no further payments are taken once the vehicle is sold or transferred.

How to Notify the DVLA Online

1. Gather the Information: Have your 11-digit document reference number from the log book (V5C) ready.
2. Access the Service: Visit gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle.
3. Provide Details: Input the address and full name of the new keeper.
4. Handover: Provide the new owner of the vehicle with the green “new keeper” slip (V5C/2) for them to tax the vehicle
