Afzal Khan takes the top spot for owning the most expensive number plate to be sold in Britain. The “F1” plate is attached to Mr Khan’s Mercedes SLR McLaren and justified the cost by saying “I think it’s a good price to pay because it’s probably worth 10 times that”.

At the time, Talal Ali Mohammed Khoury broke the world record for the most expensive plate ever bought. He spent 25 million Dirham (£3,500,000) for the single registration digit “5”. That’s not all, Mr Khoury also splashed out another £800,000 for the number “55” at the same auction! You would think the number 5 held sentimental value for Talal, on the contrary, when asked, he said the numbers held “absolutely no significance whatsoever”.
