[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]With private number plates becoming more affordable and accessible, they are now more popular than ever before. Whilst car owners are opting for a set of aesthetically pleasing new plates for their vehicles, how many private plate owners are aware of the correct legislation?
It is important to be aware that your responsibility as a private plate owner goes further than just fitting the plates and being on your way. There are many laws in place that any responsible car owner considering private number plates should be aware of. The rules in place, issued by the DVLA, should be adhered to with the utmost attention.
Failing to adhere to private plate laws could mean you are prosecuted and issued with a fine of up to £1,000. So, it’s better to be safe than sorry to avoid any unnecessary mistakes when it comes to new private plate laws in 2024.
At The Number Plate Clinic, we understand the importance of the legal guidelines surrounding number plates, hence we have devised a useful guide to help you.
What is A Number Plate?
A number plate is a legal requirement on most moving vehicles on the road. In the United Kingdom, it became a legal requirement in 1904.
Number plates all contain a unique registration number that identifies you and your vehicle. The number plates are fitted on both the front and back of your vehicle. Without these in place, it is not legal for your car to be on the road.
Your Registration Number
Your Registration number refers to the number issued to you in which you and your car are recognised by the Driving and Vehicles Licensing Agency (DVLA). This number is then displayed on your number plates to authorise your ownership and use of the vehicle in question.
How Does A Private Number Plate Differ From A Regular Number Plate?
A private number plate is an optional addition to your motor vehicle usage in the United Kingdom. A private number plate is a unique and individual registration number that is completely chosen by the vehicle owner. Some common factors that inspire peoples private registration numbers are:
- Their name
- Their birth year
- Sentimental dates and names
- Nicknames
However, as the number is entirely your choice, you are not limited in the possibilities.
How to Get A Private Registration Number
In order to get a private registration, you must buy your unique number from the DVLA before you can have any type of private number plates made up for your vehicle.
You should bear in mind that you can only purchase a unique registration number that isn’t being used by somebody else. Once you have had your number authorised and you have paid for the registration number, you can have your private number plates made, ready to be used.
What Are Modified Number Plates?
Modified number plates are number plates that have been modified in some way. This usually means they contain a different font or colour, or altered or rearranged characters that are difficult to read. These types of modified number plates can cause your vehicle to fail its MOT test.
As well as this, having modified number plates can incur a fine of up to £1,000. Therefore, it is best to avoid them for road use.
Official Number Plate Regulations
In order to avoid any fines and prosecution, vehicles that are to be used on the road must have the correct number plates fitted. These number plates must under all circumstances conform to the British standards set out by the Department of Transport.
Your number plate must adhere to the following:
- Correct positioning– The number plates must be fixed to the vehicle correctly both on the front and the back. Typically, the front number plate will have black lettering on a white plate. The back number plate is yellow with the same black lettering.
- Illuminate at night– The plates must be made with an unpatterned, reflective background that illuminates at night; making them clearly visible to other road users.
- Clearly visible– Once fitted to the car, the plates must be clearly visible with no obstruction to the characters from fixings such as bolts.
- Show the number plate supplier– The plates should visibly display the number plate supplier on them, showing both who manufactured them and where from.
- Contain the British standard number (after 2021)– if your car was manufactured in 2021 onwards, your number plates must display the following British standard number- BS AU 145e.
Can A Private Number Be Taken Off My Vehicle?
You are able to apply to the Driving Vehicles and Licence Agency to take your private registration number off your vehicle. You may wish to do this if y4szou want to swap it to another vehicle, for instance.
To do so, you must have the vehicle’s log book to hand. It costs £80 to apply and you can do so either online directly to the DVLA or by post.
If your application is approved, your vehicle will automatically be assigned its original registration number again. As proof of this, you will receive a new logbook. It is essential that you notify your insurance agency of this change immediately.
Can I Sell My Private Registration Number?
You can either sell your private registration number to someone else or you can give it to somebody else. Whichever option you decide on, this private registration number must be assigned to their specific vehicle before they can use it legally.

Motorcycles have an alternative set of regulations that must be followed. As of September 2001, a registration plate on a motorcycle must be displayed clearly on the back of the vehicle that is intended for legal road use.
Car number plates require all of the characters to appear in one line, whereas, on motorcycles, they typically appear across two lines.
